Bio Bugs

Analyze data, patterns, and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Kepler-level Medical Biology / Biology project led by Ambica Mallipeddi in collaboration with Pranav Jagada.

Project Summary: We are currently planning to work on generating data sets for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing the data using statistical models and present results that may provide some more clarity about the disease process and how it spreads, including concepts such as co-morbidities and re-infection rates. The purpose of this project is to apply epidemiology principles and implement basic research methodologies, to the current worldwide situations, thereby allowing the students to learn how diseases are studied and controlling measures are formulated by biomedical researchers.

Deliverables

Comorbidities

  • We need a better understanding of which comorbidities are the most important in the intensity of the coronavirus for a person. We have heard that those with conditions like heart disease, compromised immune systems, and diabetes are at greater risk to experience more severe and dangerous systems, but there is a lack of studies that show any statistical significance for these.
  • We will collect and use comorbidities data to establish a relationship between preexisting conditions and COVID-19 intensity in a person.

Re-infection Rates

  • We also will collect data on re-infection rates to attempt to find a pattern and learn more about how re-infection works with the coronavirus.
